Laser Skin Rejuvenation

You’ve Had a Laser Treatment, Now What?

Laser and light skin treatments have become some of the most popular cosmetic procedures, thanks to their ability to treat a number of skin concerns with relatively little downtime. In fact, broadband light (BBL) skin treatments come along with even fewer side effects and almost no downtime at all, compared to ablative laser resurfacing.

Still, there are some easy steps you can follow to help your skin heal faster and more efficiently after BBL skin rejuvenation for even more beautiful results.

Stay out of the Sun

You’ll need to avoid sun exposure for at least 1 to 2 weeks after your laser skin treatment. Not only can sun exposure slow the healing process, but it can also increase the risk of hyperpigmentation and other complications after laser and light skin treatments.

Your provider will likely recommend that you wear daily sunscreen of at least SPF 30 while your skin recovers after laser or light treatments. However, if your skin is sensitive to certain types of sunscreens, talk with your provider about when is best to start applying sunscreen after your laser treatment and which products are best for sensitive skin.

Avoid Strenuous Physical Activity

While you can resume most normal daily activities directly after BBL skin rejuvenation, it is best to avoid strenuous physical activity for at least the first day or so. This is because working up a sweat can warm your skin and may increase the risk of hyperpigmentation post-laser treatments.

Avoid Harsh Skincare Products and Exfoliants

Harsh skincare products like retinoids, alpha hydroxy acids and other exfoliants can also increase the risk of hyperpigmentation after laser treatments and can complicate the skin’s healing process. Your provider might recommend that you avoid wearing makeup for the first 24 hours after your BBL treatment.

Simplifying your skincare routine to a gentle cleanser and light moisturizer is often recommended for the first few days after laser skin treatments. However, rely on your laser treatment provider for customized instructions based on your skin type and needs.

Apply a Cool Compress

Some swelling and redness are common after laser treatments. You can apply a cool compress to help alleviate any warmth or heat. This is typically only needed within the first few hours after your BBL treatment.

Swelling, redness and warmth may last for a few hours to a few days after a BBL skin treatment.

Apply Vitamin E or Aloe

These topical ingredients can also soothe red, inflamed skin. While many people experience only minor discomfort, if any, after BBL skin treatments, vitamin E and aloe vera can help to soothe any sunburn-like side effects. Like cool compresses, these treatments will likely only be needed within the first few hours or days after getting laser treatments.

Watch Your Skin Transform

Initial redness and swelling might hide some of the immediate effects of your BBL skin treatment, but visible results should appear around 1 to 2 weeks after your procedure. Give your skin the time it needs to heal and renew for smooth, beautiful results!
