Breast Augmentation 101: Commonly Asked Questions

Breast augmentation surgery has been the #1 cosmetic procedure in North America for years, with the numbers only growing. Whatever your reason for thinking of breast augmentation, there are many things that you may still not know about this procedure. Below we have compiled a list of the most commonly asked questions about breast augmentation surgery so that you can be more informed.

Who is a good candidate for breast implants?

Almost any healthy person who would like to enhance their breast size is a good candidate for a breast augmentation – anyone from gender confirmation procedure for trans patients or breast cancer patients hoping to regain their body back. At our clinic, we have a requirement of having a BMI of under 30 for safety and health reasons. Can breast implants fix my drooping breasts?

Breast implants are used to create fuller, rounder breasts. They can be used to address asymmetry or loss of volume due to pregnancy or breastfeeding, weight loss, or even just genetics. Breast implants cannot, however, fix sagging breast tissue. The reason for this is that the implant actually goes behind the breast tissue, not inside it, contrary to popular belief. A combined breast augmentation and lift may be your best bet.

How much do breast implants typically cost?

Breast augmentation surgery costs vary in cost depending on the type of implant you choose, and the clinic that you choose to have the procedure done at. Typically, it ranges from $7,000 – $10,000 CAD. When it comes to choosing a surgeon, I always warn patients not to choose based on cost alone. Always prioritize your body and health over a discount!

What are my options for implants?

Patients often ask the difference between Saline and Silicone implants, as well as what the various implant profiles mean. Here is a brief explanation.

Saline Implants: A silicone shell, that will be rolled up and inserted through the incision. The implant is then filled with saline once it is in place. These implants allow for the smallest possible scars, but have been considered less “natural” feeling than silicone implants (though, once they’re under the breast tissue and muscle you may not feel much of a difference). Another pro to saline implants is that in the unlikely event that the implant ruptures, saline is completely harmless, and you will know right away.

Silicone Implants: A silicone shell that comes pre-filled with silicone gel. These implants are also known as “gummy bear” or “cohesive gel” implants because the silicone gel will stay inside the shell, even if the implant were to rupture (picture cutting a gummy bear in half). These implants are inserted with the Keller Funnel tool, which will slightly increase the size of the scar. These implants are widely regarded as the most natural feeling implants.

Both types of implants come in low profile, moderate profile, and high profile. A low profile implant will be flatter, providing minor projection or roundness. A moderate profile is a more natural looking implant, not too round, offering a medium amount of projection. A high profile implant is the roundest implant, which is best for patients who prefer a more dramatic, less natural appearance.

What is a tiny scar breast augmentation?

A “tiny scar” or “bloodless” breast augmentation is something that we’ve become famous for at the SixSurgery Clinic. The tiny scar breast augmentation offers 2 cm scars compared to 4-8 cm of a typical breast augmentation. We’ve also managed to reduce the surgery time to around 30 minutes without compromising safety or quality. The recovery time for the “bloodless” breast augmentation is also much quicker as we’ve managed to eliminate some of the problems associated with breast implants.

If you’re looking to undergo a breast augmentation procedure, choose a surgeon that makes your safety and satisfaction their top priority every step of the way.
