Breast augmentation offers women the opportunity to enhance their appearance through a range of implant types. There are a number of factors that influence the final breast augmentation results, including the kind of incision made by your cosmetic surgeon. There are three types of breast implant incisions, and each one has its advantages.

1. Inframammary Incision

The inframammary incision is the most commonly performed, as it enables the cosmetic surgeon to work closely with the breast. The ease of access offered with this incision type means increased accuracy for implant placement. Whether considering a large increase or smaller sized breast implants, the inframammary incision is a popular option.

This incision is made beneath the breast, just above the crease, and should be easily hidden by a bra, bikini or the breast itself. One benefit of the inframammary incision is that it can be reopened for subsequent procedures, which means no additional scarring. Women who want implants but wish to breastfeed after the procedure may be good candidates for this incision type.

2. Periareolar Incision

This incision is made around the outline of the areola, which is the colored area surrounding the nipple. The main advantage of this incision is that the cosmetic surgeon makes the incision in the darkest part of the areola, which ensures scarring is difficult to see. Women who aren’t planning on breastfeeding after the procedure may be good candidates for a periareolar incision.

3. Transaxillary Incision

This incision is made in the armpit fold. The incision creates a channel from the armpit to the breast, and the implant is placed behind the nipple. The benefit of this is that the scar’s position ensures your breasts look untouched. Women who hope to have children and breastfeed after breast augmentation may be good candidates for this incision type.
