Over or Under: Where Should You Place Breast Implants?

Breast Augmentation Results

When you decide to have breast implants, one of the choices you will need to make involves the location of your breast implants. Breast implants can be placed either under the chest muscles, known as submuscular placement, or over the chest muscles, referred to as subglandular placement. As with the other choices you’ll need to make, each method brings its own set of pros and cons and should be considered alongside the profile and breast implant type you prefer.

Submuscular Placement

One of the main benefits of submuscular breast implant placement is the ability to achieve a more natural look. Under muscle placement is also most suitable for those who are considering, or combining, a breast lift with breast augmentation, and tends to reduce the risk of rippling, capsular contracture and “bottoming out” of the implant.

Submuscular breast implant placement can also allow for better mammogram images.

Subglandular Placement

While it may seem as though submuscular breast implant placement has a high number of advantages, there are also plenty of plus points to going over the muscle. For one, placing the breast implant over the chest muscle tends to involve a less invasive procedure, with a shorter recovery time and a lower level of discomfort. Subglandular breast implant placement also allows larger breast implants to be used and, as such, more cleavage to be created.

The best breast implant placement will depend on your personal circumstances and the results you wish to achieve. Your cosmetic surgeon will discuss the most suitable option for you during your initial consultation appointment.
