Is There Anything You Can Do to Make Fillers Last Longer?

Injectable fillers on a woman

Two of the most common questions we hear about dermal fillers are, “How long do fillers last?” and “How can I make fillers last longer?” While the length of time that fillers might last will depend on factors like the type of filler used and your body’s natural metabolism rate, there are a few things you can do to help prolong your results and get the most out of injectable fillers.

1. Avoid Unnecessary Pressure

Give your filler results around 2 weeks to fully develop.

Putting repeated pressure on the treated area may cause the filler to break down more quickly over time. This isn’t to say that you can’t go about your daily life – that is to say there’s no need to change your sleeping position or avoid wearing glasses. But maybe skip the facial roller or massage for now.

In the first day or so after getting fillers or BOTOX®, your provider should instruct you to avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area, as well as participating in vigorous exercise. Following these guidelines will also help to maximize your results.

2. Minimize Stress

Finding ways to reduce stress is good for your skin and general health all-around, but it also comes with the added benefit of potentially helping your filler results to stick around a little longer. When you’re stressed, your body releases a hormone called cortisol, which is responsible for a number of adverse effects on your skin and overall health.

In fact, studies have shown that stress can accelerate the aging process, leading to lines, wrinkles and sagging skin. In a similar sense, chronic stress may also cause fillers to break down more quickly, shortening your results.

3. Get Regular Treatments

The truth is, injectable treatments like fillers and BOTOX are temporary and are eventually going to break down, with your results fading away long with them. But if you maintain a regular treatment schedule, you won’t have to even notice this transition, as new filler will already be in place.

In the case of BOTOX, there is some evidence that starting regular BOTOX treatments earlier in life could help to prevent new wrinkles from showing up on your face in the future.

4. Take Good Care of Your Skin

Adopting healthy skincare and lifestyle habits can go a long way when it comes to getting the radiant, youthful-looking complexion you want and stretching out your fillers a little longer. These include things like:

  • Staying out of the sun
  • Wearing at least SPF 15 daily
  • Using the right skincare products for your skin type and needs
  • Drinking plenty of water
  • Eating healthy foods and avoiding excess sugar

All of these things help to boost your skin on the inside and out, offering a better complement to your filler results.

At the end of the day, it is important to understand that while some fillers last longer than others, all are going to yield temporary results. If you are looking for a more long-term solution to specific cosmetic concerns, you might consider a surgical procedure such as a facelift or brow lift.
