Does Liposuction Really Work for Breast Reduction?

Breast Reduction

Women considering breast reduction may be curious about claims of a “scarless” breast reduction option. What patients should know is that this method of reducing breast size is done through liposuction. Although lipo is capable of removing excess fat deposits that cause larger, heavier breasts, it may not be the right choice for every breast reduction.

Breast Success

The breast is composed of both glandular tissue and fat cells. Liposuction removes fat cells, but surgery is needed to address the glandular tissue. In many women with larger breasts, especially those who are heavier, fat cells are a major contributor to overall breast size, so liposuction can be beneficial in making the breasts smaller and lighter. For women with back problems due to larger breasts, this can be a real blessing.

However, large breasts often go hand in hand with ptosis, or sagging of the breast. Although lipo can remove fat cells that contribute to the total weight of the breast, removing fat cells alone won’t change the placement of the breast on the torso. Women considering breast reduction may also want to combine the procedure with a breast lift, in order to lift and reshape the remaining breast tissue.

Finally, liposuction is often incorporated as a part of surgical breast reduction, although not always as the primary means of reducing the breast size. Lipo can be used around the bra line and the underarm to improve the overall aesthetics of the breast area after reduction.

Although lipo can reduce the size and weight of the breast, it may not be the best option for every woman. A close consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in breast enhancement is the first step in ensuring positive results.
