Denver Body Contouring Myths

Tummy Tuck

There are a lot of myths surrounding body contouring in Denver. My goal is for men and women who come to our office with unrealistic expectations to have a better understanding of the true nature of plastic surgery. Although I can definitely provide outstanding results, knowing some of the common myths that surround body contouring will help patients stay grounded and focused on what the real possibilities are for a new look.

Myth: Liposuction Is Weight Loss

The very first mistake that leaves patients upset is assuming that body contouring techniques are an alternative for weight loss. This could not be further from the truth. Any reputable cosmetic surgeon you consult will tell you that the ideal patient for body contouring will have already attained and is maintaining a steady, healthy weight. Cosmetic procedures are for subtle shaping, not for massive weight loss.

Myth: After Liposuction, I’ll Never Gain Weight Again

Although it would be ideal to eat right and enjoy a healthy lifestyle in order to prevent further weight gain following liposuction, the procedure itself won’t prevent future weight gain. Many fat cells in the targeted area are removed permanently from the body, but fat cells that remain can still swell and you can still gain weight at the treatment site and other areas. Bottom line: keep up with that exercise program and continue to eat right.

Myth: My Cellulite Will Be Cured

Cellulite is caused by the herniation of subcutaneous fat within fibrous connective tissues just under the skin. It is not possible to use liposuction to remove this layer of fat and tissue. In fact, in some cases liposuction may accentuate the appearance of cellulite, so it is important to have a personal consultation where a skilled surgeon can evaluate your particular needs.
