Can You Reverse a Dermal Filler Injection?

Dermal Filler

Can you reverse a dermal filler injection if you’re unhappy with the results? In most cases, dermal filler results will diminish slowly over time. But patients in certain circumstances may wish to speed up that process and reverse their dermal filler results immediately. Whether this is ultimately possible will depend most significantly on the type of filler you’ve elected to undergo.

Cases When You Might Wish to Reverse a Dermal Filler Injection

Dermal filler injections are incredibly popular, and in most cases the patients who undergo these injections are incredibly happy with the result. But can you reverse a dermal filler injection if you don’t like the way those injections turned out? Reversing a dermal filler injection depends on the type of filler used during the original procedure. Some fillers can be dissolved with a simple injections. But others are more permanent.

Your cosmetic surgeon will know which fillers are reversible and which tend to be more permanent. If you have a concern about the duration of your results or the possibility of reversing those results, you should bring these concerns up during your initial consultation (or any of your following consultations).

It’s important to point out, of course, that most dermal fillers injections are not permanent to begin with. Most fillers will last anywhere between six and twenty-four months, depending on the type of filler used. That said, there are a few fillers – such as Bellafill – that are considered effectively permanent. Which filler is most suitable for your procedure will depend on many factors, including your physical constitution and your desired final results. But can you really reverse a dermal filler injection if things go a little wonky? Let’s find out how that might work.

Are You Using a Hyaluronic Acid Based Filler?

The most common filler type employed by cosmetic surgeons today is the hyaluronic acid based filler. While the name might sound somewhat intimidating, these fillers are actually based on chemicals and compounds already found in your body. And that’s one of the reasons that fillers such as Juvederm and Voluma are both so wildly popular.

That doesn’t mean that all hyaluronic acid based fillers are created equal. Indeed, fillers can vary tremendously:

  • The particle size of hyaluronic acid based fillers can vary; fillers with smaller particles can produce finer results but may not last as long
  • The duration of hyaluronic acid based fillers can also vary by a significant amount depending on the injection point and on the filler of choice
  • Additives are sometimes introduced to hyaluronic acid based fillers in order to help vary the effects; these additives can sometimes change the duration and look of the fillers

There are all kinds of variations of hyaluronic acid based dermal filler injections. That’s why there’s not just Juvederm, there’s Juvederm Volbella and Juvederm XC and various other brand names. However, it’s important to note that almost all hyaluronic acid based fillers can, to some degree, be reversed.

How Do You Reverse a Hyaluronic Acid Based Filler?

Reversing the effects of a hyaluronic acid based filler is, essentially, just as easy as the initial injections. Surgeons will inject a solvent beneath your skin that will dissolve the filler in question. The results from this solvent may not be immediate, but they do speed up the process by which the hyaluronic acid based filler is naturally absorbed into your body. This will effectively diminish and eventually reverse the filler treatment results.

What If My Filler is Not Hyaluronic Acid Based?

There are certainly effective fillers on the market that are not hyaluronic acid based, and they are quite common. Whether each one is reversible or not depends on the filler in question, and you’ll need to talk to your cosmetic surgeon or medical spa professional in order to get a definitive answer on your particular treatment.

Injectables such as Bellafill, however, are designed to resist absorption into your body. They’re supposed to be effectively permanent, after all. Most cosmetic surgeons will probably suggest that you use a hyaluronic acid based filler on your first session and only move on to something such as Bellafill if you like the results.

Not Always About Results

In some uncommon instances, reversing your dermal filler injection isn’t necessarily about results. Rarely, complications can pop up that might make patients want to reverse their dermal filler results. In those cases, you should consult with your plastic or cosmetic surgeon immediately in order to determine the most prudent course of action.

If you don’t like your dermal filler results for any reason, you should speak with your cosmetic or plastic surgeon immediately. If your procedure was performed using hyaluronic acid based dermal filler, you may find more success reversing your final results. However, the answer to the question, can you reverse a dermal filler injection, is a definite yes! At least, in some cases. For specifics on your case, the best place for answers is always going to be your cosmetic or plastic surgeon
