Nearly a third of breast augmentation patients are in their twenties. Most of these young ladies have always felt self-conscious about being underdeveloped, or simply wish to have a curvier figure. Breast augmentation can be an excellent way of achieving a look that raises your self-confidence and boosts your body image, but before younger women embark on their breast augmentation journey, there are a few things to consider.
Are Your Breasts Fully Developed?
While most women will have a pretty good idea of their breast size by the time they reach college age, it’s important to understand that breast size can continue to change well into your twenties and even beyond. This is especially true if you undergo lifestyle changes like weight fluctuations, or start or stop taking birth control pills.
Saline or Silicone?
Both saline and silicone can create excellent results in the right patient. However, the best implant type for you depends on your goals and preferences. Younger breast augmentation candidates should also be aware that while the FDA recommends that women under the age of 22 only use saline implants, this is merely a recommendation, not a law. Age limits for breast implants aren’t legally mandated, so women 18 and over are free to decide for themselves whether saline or silicone will create their desired effect.
Do You Want to Breastfeed?
If you plan on breastfeeding in the future, talk with your cosmetic surgeon about the implications that breast implants could have on your ability to breastfeed. Depending on the surgical technique used, milk ducts can be disrupted. Women in their twenties may feel like the idea of starting a family is far off in the future, but it’s much better to plan ahead.
