Laser hair removal just keeps rising in popularity, with the latest statistics reporting over one million treatments in 2014 alone. As summer approaches, it may be time to consider planning your new hair-free look. This step-by-step guide for laser hair removal can help.
Your Consultation
The first step in getting rid of embarrassing body hair is scheduling your consultation. Make sure you find a skilled cosmetic surgeon or certified laser technician to perform your treatments. Even though laser hair removal is a minimally invasive procedure, a less experienced treatment provider may not be adequately trained in laser technology.
Pre-Appointment Prep
Before your first laser hair removal appointment, be sure to follow all instructions from your surgeon. This typically includes no plucking, waxing or electrolysis for at least two weeks prior to treatment to ensure that the hair is a proper length to absorb energy from the laser. Inform your doctor of any new medications you’ve begun, and stay away from the tanning bed! Tanning from sun exposure, self-tanners or tanning beds can alter your skin tone enough to affect your end results.
Between Sessions
Between your laser hair removal sessions, avoid sun exposure as much as possible. Don’t shave for at least several days before your next appointment, and don’t bleach your hair as this will affect your hair’s capacity to absorb light waves from the laser. Most patients require anywhere from three to seven treatments to achieve the results they want, and you may wish to touch up your results a couple of times a year to maintain your hair-free appearance.
