3 Benefits of Going Drain-Free

Woman's hands on her stomach.

Traditional abdominoplasty can deliver undeniably impressive results, yet typically includes one aspect that patients aren’t so thrilled about: the idea of handling post-operative drains. These days, more surgeons are recognizing the three main benefits of adapting their techniques to bypass the need for surgical drains during recovery.

1. Better Contours

During my C.L.A.S.S.®  drain-free tummy tuck, I incorporate liposuction to help me craft very natural abdominal contours with much greater finesse than surgery alone allows. Lipo can also be used in adjacent areas, like the hips and thighs, to improve the transition toward the abdomen and better frame your new, slimmer lines. In my opinion, the best tummy tuck results are seen when lipo is included.

2. Easier Recovery

After undergoing surgery that requires general anesthesia, the last thing that patients want is something important to keep track of. Yet, surgical drains are just that. Patients need to note fluid output and other details when what they really want to do is just relax and recover. Many patients also report less pain after a drain-free tummy tuck compared to a traditional abdominoplasty.

3. There’s No Drains

This last one may seem like a no-brainer but honestly, most patients are so excited about not having to deal with drains after surgery that it’s worth mentioning once again. While drains may be a necessary component following a standard tummy tuck, that doesn’t mean that they’re any kind of fun. Post-op drains just leave one more aspect of recovery open to chance or human error. It’s much more convenient for both patient and surgeon to ditch the drains for a better tummy tuck experience.
