Textured or Smooth? Picking the Best Breast Implants

Breast Implants

One of the best things about breast augmentation is the wealth of customization options available. Women with all kinds of body shapes and breast sizes can find augmentation choices to enhance their figure. While this personalization is a great (and necessary) part of getting results you’re happy with, it can be hard to know which of these options will give you the best breast augmentation results.

Most women are familiar with different implant sizes and styles, yet they’re are unaware of the differences that implant texture can make in the final results.

Textured vs. Smooth

The two texture options for breast implants are textured and smooth. Textured implants have a fine coarse surface while smooth options have a sleek surface. One is not necessarily better than the other, and both options come with their own advantages.

  • Textured: The primary benefit of textured implants is the grip that they have in the implant pocket, preventing unnecessary movement or displacement. This movement isn’t a problem for every style of implant but becomes a possible issue with teardrop-shaped implants. These types of implants try to mimic the natural breast shape and rely on stability in the breast pocket. The textured surface helps keep the implants in their proper position.
  • Smooth: Smooth implants can shift in the breast pocket and are typically thinner and softer than textured ones. Smooth implants cost less, they generally last longer than textured implants and they remain the standard option for most implant procedures.

So, which option will give you the best results? Textured implants may be beneficial in situations where implant movement must be avoided, but surgeons generally rely on smooth implants unless an alternative is needed.
