How Implants Affect Breast Shape

Breast Shape

Although breast implants are typically thought of in terms of how they affect your cup size, breast shape can be affected by implants too. How much could these changes in breast shape impact your final breast augmentation results?

Natural vs. Augmented Breast Shape

Natural breast shape can vary tremendously from woman to woman, but generally features more fullness at the bottom of the breast, then tapers upward in a gentle slope. Some breast implants are teardrop-shaped to mimic this natural curve.

After breast augmentation, women should certainly see more volume through the lower breast where the implants were placed, but may also see some more upper pole fullness—that is, fullness through the upper part of the chest. The amount of upper pole fullness present after augmentation will depend on implant size, type and placement, along with your existing anatomy.

Shape vs. Placement

Breast shape should not be confused with the placement of your breasts. Many women mistakenly believe that implants are a good solution for creating a perkier look in breasts that are naturally saggy or droopy. In reality, those concerns are related more to breast placement, which isn’t affected by implants.

For a breast shape that’s fuller as well as more uplifted, your surgeon may suggest combining augmentation with a breast lift. A lift can also be helpful to refresh your appearance if augmented breasts have changed with time or age.

Your Final Results

Ultimately, breast implants shouldn’t significantly change your natural breast shape unless additional procedures are included. After implants have settled into their final position, augmented breasts normally look like a larger version of your existing breasts. If a change in shape is one of your goals, be sure you talk to your surgeon about your options.
